P’lok Pinoyz celebrates Christmas
Pure fun and laughter and genuine Pinoy spirit of Christmas filled Rueantala Function Hall of Ruean Phae Royal Park Hotel as P’lok Pinoyz of Phitsanulok celebrated Paskong Pinoy, December 18.
The singing of the Philippine National Anthem and the Opening Prayer led by Mr. Jared Teves formally opened the joyous event which was then followed by the Words of Welcome of Mr. John Patrick Benliro, PRO of P’lok Pinoy Council.
The dinner was served at around 7:30 in the evening which also gave opportunity for the attendees to chat and mingle with each other while enjoying the sumptuous meal. In her Christmas greetings, Miss Leah Doysabas, president of P’lok Pinoyz Council expressed her overwhelming joy about the positive response of the Filipino community in the council’s first grand Filipino gathering.
Paskong Pinoy was even felt with the game facilitated by Andy Cubalit and Letty Comeros also officers of P’lok Pinoy Council. More highlights of the event were the presentations of the three organizations of Phitsanulok Pinoyz. The I Mission rendered a choral and a dance presentation, the SDA caroled the crowd with Hark the Herald while the SNCFC performed a contemporary interpretation of The Nativity Story and Paskong Pinoy song number. Mr. Paulo Masangcay was also awarded as the winner of the P’lok Pinoy Council logo making contest.
Meanwhile, the men and women became little kids once again as they excitedly opened their respective gifts in the Kris Kringle time and as if to print all actions in photos, everybody posed for more in the pictorial session.
“To be disunited is easy and its fruit is always ugly, to be united is difficult but its fruit is always beautiful” thus quoted Mr. Stephen Luri Mercado, representative of I Mission to P’lok Pinoy Council in his closing words right after the heartwarming community singing of Paskong Pinoy. A closing prayer was also administered by Mr. Mercado to formally conclude the occasion.
The Christmas gold, red and green themed party was hosted by Miss Sarah Jane Benliro (SNCFC), Lorenzo Caballes, Jr. (I Mission) and Mr. Jiggs Padero (SDA).

Ambassador Lacanlale visits Phitsanulok Province, Renders Consular Services for Filipino Community
Wednesday, November 10, 2010
Do you find the title of the article catchy or even close to it? For me it is indeed catchy...I wish i can think of titles like this in the future hehe..
Anyways, I didn't know that the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) wrote an article regarding the embassy's visit here in Phitsanulok.
Here's the picture that was uploaded on their website.
And the complete article HERE
Visit From The Embassy
Sunday, October 31, 2010
Two days ago, October 30, 2010 at Topland Hotel Plaza, the Philippine Embassy in Thailand headed by HE Lingling Lacanlale visited the Filipino Community in Phitsanulok. It was one of the embassy's way to help all Pinoys not just in Pitsanulok, but to the entire kingdom as well regarding visa related issues, OEC, OWWA, etc.
Me and Letty hosted the event with no practice whatsoever, so any COMMENTS you have now, no matter how rude will be accepted lol. Well, for the most part it went well. We didn't do much of the talking anyway. Different questions were raised and answered. Problems were solved, and vague information were clarified. The newly elected officers of P'lok Pinoyz were also inducted headed by the President Ms. Leah Doysabas.
We Are Back!

Teachers in Phitsanulok and the entire Kingdom of Thailand enjoyed the term break that lasted two weeks for the others, while three weeks for some. Well, there are couple more who are still on vacation. Our contributors Teacher Letty is enjoying the bustling city of Hongkong, while Teacher Cheryl and Teacher Joy are celebrating their Philippine homecoming party hehe.
Teacher Enzo on the other hand had a blast exploring the beaches and natural wonders of the south. Check out his facebook page. Lots of pictures.... Hurry! While these people experienced enjoyment, I did too. Though the level of happiness might not be at par with them (they visited a different place huhuh), at least i did not spend money (i didnt have money for the trip anyway, lol). Anyways, the second semester in my school started yesterday. I got four different subjects to teach, and three different subjects to learn for my study. Lot of work, huh?

God Created The Teacher

Did you ever ask yourself if God really did create teachers and if it was mentioned in the Bible? It never occurred to me though, however if you asked yourself these questions then i suggest you keep on reading...
On the 6th day, God created men and women. On the 7th day, he rested. Not so much to recuperate, but rather to prepare himself for the work he was going to do on the next day. For it was on that day - the 8th day - that God created the FIRST TEACHER.
This TEACHER, though taken from among men and women, had several significant modifications. In general, God made the TEACHER more durable than other men and women. The TEACHER was made to arise at a very early hour and to go to bed no earlier than 11 PM, with no rest in between.
The TEACHER had to be able to withstand being locked up in an air-tight classroom for six hours with thirty-five "monsters" on a rainy Monday. And the TEACHER had to be fit to correct 103 papers over Easter vacation. Yes, God made the TEACHER tough...but gentle, too. The TEACHER was equipped with soft hands to wipe away the tears of the neglected and lonely student... those of the sixteen-year old girl who was not asked to the prom.
And into the TEACHER God poured a generous amount of patience. Patience when a student asks to repeat the directions the TEACHER has just repeated for someone else. Patience when the kids forget their lunch money for the fourth day in a row. Patience when one-third of the class fails the test. Patience when the text books haven't arrived yet, and the semester starts tomorrow.
And God gave the TEACHER a heart slightly bigger than the average human heart. For the Teacher's heart had to be big enough to love the kid who screams, "I hate this class - it's boring!" and to love the kid who runs out of the classroom at the end of the period without so much as a "goodbye," let alone a "thank you."
And lastly, God gave the TEACHER an abundant supply of HOPE. For God knew that the TEACHER would always be hoping. Hoping that the kids would someday learn how to spell... hoping not to have lunchroom duty... hoping that Friday would come... hoping for a free day... hoping for deliverance.
When God finished creating the TEACHER, he stepped back and admired the work of His hands. And God saw that the TEACHER was good. Very Good! And God smiled, for when he looked at the TEACHER, he saw into the future.

He knew that the future is in the hands of the TEACHERS. And because God loves TEACHERS so much... on the 9th day God created... SNOW DAYS!
Happy World Teachers' Day
Monday, October 4, 2010
School stuff occupied me these past few days that i forgot to make a post. My other blogs are also like dormant volcanoes tired of their existence lol. Anyways, reading a lot sometimes pays off. Since i was having difficulty thinking of a post, i started checking my facebook friends' pages to help me think of something to write. Good thing i did because one of them posted "Happy World Teachers' Day". I was like HuuWhaaat? Really? Haha I am a teacher but I didnt know today is my day..I checked more of this celebration and here's what i got from my dear friend Wiki.
World Teachers' Day, held annually on October 5th since 1994, commemorates teachers’ organizations worldwide. Its aim is to mobilise support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers.
According to UNESCO, World Teachers' Day represents a significant token of the awareness, understanding and appreciation displayed for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development.
Education International (EI) (the global union federation that represents education professionals worldwide) strongly believes that World Teachers' Day should be internationally recognized and celebrated around the world. EI also believes that the principles of the 1966 and 1997 Recommendations should be considered for implementation in all nations.
Over 100 countries observe World Teachers' Day. The efforts of Education International and its 401 member organisations have contributed to this widely spread recognition. Every year, EI launches a public awareness campaign to highlight the contributions of the teaching profession.
Hmm, now what lol? Well, Happy World Teachers' Day! Mabuhay all teachers in the world!

Actors wanted
Employment agencies in are in dire need of actors for live performances on stage. Their primary audience is children aged from six to eighteen years old, but sometimes extending into the twenties. Their secondary audience is the parents, school visitors, government officials, and other dignitaries in public or private events. Preferred actors are single white females, from their late teens to mid-twenties, tall, slender, blonde, blue eyed, with a pleasant smile, and meeting the last but most important characteristic: they must sport large noses.
Body piercing, visible tattoos, drinking or smoking in public, or any kind of physical handicap, even if slight, will disqualify the applicant. Eyeglasses, as long as they are not too thick, are permitted. Some exceptions will be considered and are listed at the end.
Actors will play the role of English teachers. As a result, it is important but not imperative that they speak English. To this date, our most successful actor never spoke one word; she just sat in the reception area where students were enrolling, wearing a school name tag, looking very professional and smiling. The number of students in the English Program nearly doubled that semester and we laughed all the way to the bank.
Those who hold a passport from a country where English is the official language will be paid twice the salary of those who do not. A college degree, real or not, in any subject, will also be needed for a work permit.

Actor's duties are as follows:
1) Be at the school half an hour before the official start time. Since the official start time is 8:00 AM, as stipulated by the work contract, arrival time is expected to be at 7:30 AM. During the 30 minutes before the start of work, actors must stand right outside the main school gate to wave and smile at the parents as they drop off the kids. This reinsures the parents' belief that their children are getting a world-class education. Opening vehicle doors and helping the kids get out will accrue bonus points.
2) The morning service starts at 8:00 AM. Actors must stand in solemn attention, with the rest of the local staff, as the national anthem is sung, the flag is raised, and the prayers said. After main announcements are made, the actors will perform a skit asserting how easy and fun it is to speak English. This will promote future enrollment in the English program even if students have to pay extra fees. Student enrollment is the lifeblood of any and all schools. Acting daily will accrue bonus points.

After main announcements are made, the actors will perform a skit asserting how easy and fun it is to speak English. This will promote future enrollment in the English program even if students have to pay extra fees. Student enrollment is the lifeblood of any and all schools. Acting daily will accrue bonus points.
3) While in public, actors must act as true symbols of fully responsible, well-mannered and cultured adults for they are seen as pillars of the community and role models that every parent want their children to look up to. This means that an actor cannot be seen sitting in a drinking establishment other than a coffee shop. Drinking alcoholic beverages or smoking in public will be cause for immediate dismissal with forfeiture of pay. The same is true if the actor is wearing less than decent clothing showing too much skin or in the worst case, part of the undergarment. Actors should under no circumstances be seen holding hands or sitting too close to a member of the opposite sex. Actors should not be seen walking around licking an ice cream cone, as this is unbecoming behavior with a sexual connotation attached to it. Note that we did not make any of this rules. They are cultural and social expectations. You will be judged by your looks, your skin, and your clothes (or lack thereof) so don't be surprised if the judgment is skin deep.
4) Now that the nature of this role, based in public exposure, has been made clear, a word on actor costume (dress) and make up is in order. In the morning, from the moment the actors step out into the street, locals will automatically assume they are English teachers, so it is imperative that they dress for the part. A business like attire is ‘de rigueur'. This means well tucked in and buttoned up, light colored blouse with collar and covered shoulders (no cleavage is to be seen!), below the knee dark skirt that is not revealing in any way (cannot be tight), and closed toe shoes, preferably black. High heels are acceptable as long as they are not of the ‘stiletto' type. No bright colors, casual, or fashion clothing is allowed. The more conservative, bordering with the outdated, the better. The use of black bras will be cause for immediate dismissal. Worse yet, actors caught wearing a ‘g-string' type of undergarment will be subject to a severe spanking where it hurts the most (while still wearing the ‘g-string') by the school director using his bare hands. Note that all clothes have to be impeccably ironed. Actors showing up for work with wrinkled clothes, however minor, will not be allowed into the school grounds. Use of facial powder is discouraged and lipstick should never be too reddish. Local female teachers overindulge in make up but they are usually forgiven as they are trying to ‘whiten' up their normally tan faces. White is might and since you are white, you already have the very best and cannot get any whiter. Don't alter it. Showing your face often and wearing a business suit will accrue double bonus points.
5) Now that appearances in the proper attire have been established, the actors will be asked to play the role of teacher by playing games (hangman, tic-tac-toe, bingo, scrabble, trivial pursuit, musical chairs), doing artistic activities (coloring, paper doll cutting, flower arrangement, glass etching, batik art), singing songs (in English, please), strumming the guitar, clapping hands, passing out candy and in general, having a good time. While not placed first on this list of duties and responsibilities, ‘teaching' English in a fun way * IS * the primary directive as this insures ‘happy' paying customers who come back for more. Since this is so much fun, actors will be asked to do this role play at least five times daily to an exciting captive audience of fifty wonderful lively children. Making the kids happy will accrue triple bonus points.
6) Actors will often be asked to model and pose for photo ‘ops'. The pictures will be used in school brochures promoting the English Program, in billboards advertising school capabilities, in school catalogs, newspaper articles, and in other types of advertising that may include banners on buses, taxis, and trains. Since the actors are now being promoted in the media and definitely converted into public figures, all at the school's expense, bonus points will quadruple.
7) The actor will be required to attend each and all events where the local staff or students are present. This includes, fairs, sports games, cheerleading contests, parades, picnics, camping trips, field trips, outings, luncheons, dinners, parties, celebrations, and conferences. In most circumstances, the actor will be seated near or right next to the VIP's. With the exception of picnics, camping trips, and field trips, the business like attire is still expected. No overtime is paid for working outside business hours, but the more events where the actor is seen participating, the more bonus points.
8) Near the end of the term, the actors will be asked to write tests but this is not a difficult task at all and it's only meant to remove this responsibility from the local staff whose knowledge of English is poor at best. The tests consists of a series of multiple choice questions with two possible answers (right and wrong), for example:
Mary (is/are) beautiful.
Since there is one possible correct answer out of two, students are guaranteed to answer correctly at least half the time for as many questions as there may be. Mathematicians call this a ‘binomial distribution'. Given a large enough number of questions even a blindfolded lifeless thousand-year-old mummy will be assured a fifty percent correct answer rate. This is the reason why the passing grade is set at fifty percent. Of course, if a student actually knows any English, the correct answer rate will be much higher. In the very rare cases where the blindfolded lifeless mummy scores less than fifty percent, the grade can be ‘adjusted' by the teacher with ‘participation' points (even for a lifeless mummy). This way all students are assured to pass the subject. Bonus points are subtracted if an actor ‘fails' a student for an actor is not a teacher and it would be near impossible to explain an irate parent why the ‘teacher' didn't ‘teach' the failing student. The school would get into a lot of trouble if the ruse were discovered. Tests with passing grades, although worthless, are documented proof of successful academic progress and are audited by the authorities on a regular basis. Note that the authorities also went through the same educational system and methods and since today's students will be tomorrow's authorities, this cycle is inevitably insured to continue in perpetuity. School staff, students, actors, parents and bureaucrats win, everybody benefits and there is a balanced happy medium all can co-exist in.
9) During final exams, the actors will take the role of a proctor. All that is required is for the actors to look very serious (the only time they are allowed to look serious) and with a majestic air, walk up and down the rows of students taking the exams. This would be the performance's grand finale and the complete embodiment of the empress (or emperor) wearing gold gilded clothes. You'll feel like a star.
10) On extremely rare occasions, actors may be asked to teach English, but this is the least of their worries, as the high school students' English skill level is far below the third grade and the actors will most likely be struggling with students who cannot pronounce ‘excuse me', ‘schedule', ‘fish', or even ‘mouse'. There is a bright side, however, for students can say the three-word sentence ‘I love you'. If you can teach the students to say a four-word sentence, such as ‘I want to learn', or ‘My house is large', you should seriously consider changing careers from acting to teaching English. You could make enough for an early retirement.
11) Actors who accrue sufficient bonus points will be granted Summer Camp work where the duties are to accompany and be seen with the students at parks, zoos, markets, shopping malls, entertainment complexes, movies, and food courts. Actors and students will be issued colorful baseball caps and distinctive polo shirts with the school logo on the back. This is a great publicity and advertising stunt. Lunch boxes (Basil chicken over rice) to be provided daily by the school.
Exceptions:
Exceptions:
We recognize our requirements are a tall order, but we are understanding and flexible and will sacrifice one or two things:
• An actor may be male and over thirty but all else has to be perfect. This means he cannot be short and chubby.
• An actor need not be blonde and blue eyed, but he cannot be bald and have a flat nose.
• He may meet all he physical requirements but if he insists in playing the role of a serious teacher, then he is of no use.
• An actor need not be blonde and blue eyed, but he cannot be bald and have a flat nose.
• He may meet all he physical requirements but if he insists in playing the role of a serious teacher, then he is of no use.
In all honesty, most of our actors are male since it's nearly impossible to get a female to stay after she gets accosted by the local male staff, who are chomping at the bit to ride the white horse.
When it comes to males, we do prefer Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise look-alikes, although surprisingly, we had good success with an actor who looked like George W. Bush, silly grin and all: female students kept coming back re-enrolling at the school even after graduation. We made a bundle of cash on the silly grin.
Compensation package:
• Monthly salary will be the same as it was ten years ago by secret price fixing with other schools in the vicinity. Paid on time in freshly printed cash and guaranteed not to bounce like checks.
• Medical insurance pays a percentage of the bill if hospitalized for something other than drunkenness.
• Paid official holidays (but not Christmas, Thanksgiving, Independence, and Labor Day).
• Sick leave days (except Mondays, Fridays and days before or after a holiday).
• School provided housing consisting of a studio with bed and air con. User pays water and electricity. User will save money, as there is no hot water heater and no phone. User to buy linen and furnishings at own expense. Front gate and door are locked at 10:00 PM.
• Actors to pay for all transportation costs including round trip airfare from country of origin and all visa application expenses including visa runs to the border.
• Unless dismissed before the end of the contract, all bonus points will be converted to frequent flyer air miles (some actors have been known to get enough for a Bangkok-Utapao air ticket).

Catholic school teacher caught caning students

The video on youtube received several derogatory comments aimed at the teacher. I can't blame you peeps. It has been a hot topic in the teachingspehere (sorry, lack of a better term), especially for teachers in Thailand. The incident happened two weeks ago but I know it's still worth posting.
So here is what Donald Patnaude wrote at the ajarnstreet link.
Permitted, should teachers be permitted to throw objects at their students? Should teachers be allowed to cane their students? Well, I hope you’re like me and say 100% NO WAY! It does look like some Thai teachers may disagree with me on this because two Thai teachers (both teaching in Nakhon Ratchasima) were both caught within a week doing exactly this. The female teacher was caught throwing a whiteboard eraser at a student, hitting him in the eye. The second, which is more serious was an unqualified male Thai teacher caught on video caning about 40 students. I can only hope that these teachers and any other teachers will always receive the maximum penalty allowed by law if found guility. This is my sincere honest opinion for every teacher on this Earth. No exceptions. Please look at the video on Youtube.
I couldn't agree more with his statement. This should be taken seriously. Look at how he caned each student. Arggggh!

Better Late Than Never - A Birthday Greeting!
Friday, September 10, 2010
Last Saturday our friend Ms. Leah Doysabas celebrated her birthday at Villa Fedelita. The "buffet" however was done a day before it and was well attended by teachers in Phitsanulok. I arrived late because we had a "Goodbye Seniors Party" at the university which hindered me to be there early. Still, it was good being there.
It's been a week yet I can't remember if i greeted her a HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Anyhow, the "Better late than never" type of thing is really applicable at the moment lol. Happy Birthday ate! Joyie made a video of Ate Lei's pics with Kuya Lloyd's voice as the background. It was cool!
And just for the record, I read some comments about the pic of Ate Lei and Kuya Rey (WOW Rhyme). What's the commotion about? Can somebody decipher it? Kuya, ate..this is just a blog..spare me, please!!!! Message me if this should be edited or leave it as it is hehe..
Once again, HAPPY BIRTHDAY ATE LEI!

My Name is Enzo...This is My Story...
Sunday, September 5, 2010
Coming up with a sound decision is never an easy thing to do, especially if it has something to do with your career path, most especially, if you are uncertain of what lies ahead of you. There are many if's and buts’, much more things to consider and one false move could make or break you but if you will involve God in that decision making – YOU will never go wrong because when you leave everything to HIM, He will make all the impossible possible.
I am just one of the myriad of Filipino teachers who despite of the uncertainty of what lies in the foreign land still persist to take flight in search for better opportunities. Each of us has our own story to tell. My story is about how God made everything went smoothly from my coming to Thailand, applying for a job and putting me in a place where I can continue serving HIM in my own little way.
Career
Right after graduation from college, I was blessed to land a job in a prestigious learning center at the heart of Caraga region- Butuan City. For years, I have gained the trust of my superiors, earned respect from the parents and bestowed with the love of my students. What more can a teacher ask for when all his lesson objectives are achieved. What else can a teacher want more when his students learn and digest everything he has taught? Perhaps, no more. Yet again, perhaps a little bit more. Like a tree deeply rooted to a solid ground, uprooting is very hard. For six years I had a created for me a little place under the big bright sun in that institution. More than anything else, I had established friendship more precious than glittering gold. To simply put it, I have loved my stay in that school.
Dilemma
However, I felt I needed to let go to look for a better place under the sun. I needed to make that very significant decision. For one whole year, I prayed for guidance. I prayed for wisdom. I asked for one significant sign whether it was really time for me to go and God answered me clearly with that. But then, still I had doubts. Once, I even thought, it was only a coincidence. What a little faith I had.
March drew near and it was time to make the decision. I continued to ask God’s divine intervention with the resolution that I had to make. Finally, I decided to bid goodbye to my school for six good years. Then came in front of me, crossroads that got me bewildered as to which was the right path to take. My heart desired for a job overseas but still I have opened myself for all the other possibilities. With that desire in my heart, I prayed for HIS provision considering the amount that I have to raise for my ticket (domestic and overseas which I have to book earlier) then personal pocket money and I was empty handed.
My prayer: “Lord, if YOU want me to go, YOU will just provide for everything.” God is great because He did use people to bless me with the exact amount that I really have to have before I can fly to Thailand. I was instructed to bring not less than $300 in my pocket and with God’s amazing greatness I had more than that. And the most noteworthy: I got that $300 for FREE.
Thailand
April 12, 2010, 11:30 P.M. I was welcomed to the Land of Smiles with a phone call from my host friend that he could not pick me up at the airport due to health reasons. Panic and fear seized my whole being with the thought of traveling alone in an unknown destination armed with not even a single Thai word to speak or to comprehend. If there is one major problem of a first timer in this land – that is not being able to communicate properly due to LANGUAGE BARRIER. With pounding heart, I stayed in the airport until morning getting no sleep at all. And in all those times I was wide awake, I just entrusted my whole trip to the Almighty God. At the break of dawn, I prepared myself for the journey that I had to embark. From the airport, I took a cab going to Mochit Bus Station where I had to secure a ticket to Mae Sot Province, which has an estimated travel time of totally 8 to ten hours from Bangkok.
Getting the right ticket and getting to the right bus was never easy but again I claimed for God’s protection and guidance. Throughout the whole trip going to Mae Sot, I was never alone, I was accompanied by the constant call of my host friend and of course, my unseen yet my very present help – my God and my provider.
- To be continued… _
I didn't know how to teach until i met you!

The video below is a very inspirational story of a teacher who took delight in marking an "X and F" to her particular student.....
And the student who taught his teacher how to teach!
I cried..it moved me! I'm sure you will too.

Welcome Sir Enzo!
Saturday, August 28, 2010
This post is dedicated to the newest contributor of the blog, Sir Enzo! And just for the record, Sir Enzo is the very first Filipino teacher at Buddhachinaraj School in Phitsanulok.
To get to know more of him, here is his superb introduction that he sent me through facebook.
In the Spanish culture of pride wherein the continuity of name matters most, I am named after my father LORENZO believing that the last born son will be the bearer of the the only legacy he can bestow upon his children, so therefore I am baptized with the name - LORENZO M. CABALLES, JR. , the youngest among 7.
Birthplace: Esperanza, Agusan del Sur.
In a little secluded place of that humble abode called Bentahon, I was born and raised. Enveloped by austere way of life, my childhood was that of a typical innocent little boy where every full moon becomes a joyous occasion in the neighborhood because my elder brothers and sisters with their friends gathered in the wide yard to play "patintero".
I never know, there was a wide wide world out there. Back then, TV was a totally foreign object and to ride in a jeepney was a heaven. "Lampara" was the only thing we had to illumine our nights. What we had was a small battery operated transistor radio where I used to listen to radio soaps and from there I got familiar with the song - "yesterday".
Birthday: May 26
It is always a special day when this day comes. Just as the flowers of May blossom and children go to the chapel to offer flowers for the Virgin Mother of God, I was blessed to be born on the 26th, after surviving the intentional act of abortion of both parents which was done to save my dear mother as she wasn't feeling right while she was conceiving me.
Pretty sad story but I bet, by now they are just so thankful they didn't succeed of getting rid of me. Don't you think so? :)
Experiences:
After having successfully battled the roadblocks of a student life, right after graduation, I was given the opportunity to work in a private institution in the heart of Butuan City. The school is named: Enfant Cheri Study Centre, Inc. In the entire 6 years of my stay in that school, I have given everything I have just so to make myself an effective teacher. Good enough that I have gained the trust of my employers, the respect of the parents and the love of my students. God has blessed me with several recognitions in school, division, regional and even nation wide being one of the 2010 Outstanding School Paper Adviser of the Philippines.
Thailand:
I first stepped on the grounds of the Kingdom of Thailand on April 12. After a month-long stay in the district of Mae Sot, Tak, God provided a job opportunity at Buddhachinnarajpittaya School in the city of Phitsanulok.
Life has been great by God's grace. I met many Filipinos who in their own way shared their journey in Thailand which inspired me in an enormous way.
Life here has become so colorful with the friends around - Filipinos and Thai people alike. My students have taught me to become a better teacher and a better individual by stretching out my patience in the longest way I could. They too, add spices to my Thailand experience just like their foods which have now become my favorite.
Foods:
And speaking of foods - as they say, Thai people eat everything. In all the numerous variety - let me spell out my favorite: KWAY TIYAO and will it ever be...

Great things start from small beginnings...
I am reminded of a Milo commercial way back my childhood school years every time I use this tag line. Back then, it was just a favorite line that I hum every now and then simply because I find it's tune catchy and light. I was oblivious of it's meaning until I realized that the line is after all very deep and profound.
Humble Beginnings...
Even as a kid I have wanted to be a school paper writer. I have wanted my name to be printed out in a school magazine and my pictures to appear in its pages just like those of my neighbor's classmates whom I secretly admired because they got published in the paper. With that inspiration, I forced my parents to enroll me in that private school in the nearby town hoping that one day, I too, will read myself in the publication.
Little did I know that a freshman is seldom given an opportunity to write not unless with an exceptional writing ability. But from a boy who graduated from a little "barangay" school, my senses told me, I am too far to be even called "good". I have expected too much of myself. The year ended without even me having to get a glimpse of the publication office. And the worst scenario came, I needed to move to a public school due to financial constraints. I have to bid goodbye to that seemingly elusive aspiration.
To my surprise, the opportunity to write was given to me in my new school. I became a staff and eventually joined contests in journalism. I had some triumphs but there were too much disappointments. I didn't even have the chance to join a regional competition and so I thought, I am not a "WRITER."
But just the same, I continued to write. In college, I continued the passion for writing and even landed a post in the editorial board. Eventually, I graduated with a special citation in journalism which I considered as a culmination of a childhood dream.
The campus journalism experience is a significant part why I landed a teaching job right after graduation. There, I pursued my love for writing by training my students in the same battle as I had gone through in the earlier stage of my life. For six years, we were blessed to be hailed as top performers throughout the whole region which paved the way to the most coveted recognition I have received during the 2010 National Schools Press Conference held in Tagum City.
Blogger: Beginner...
Starting this blog is never an easy one too. Language barrier is a major problem that hindered me to get started as soon as I received the invitation. Considering the most appropriate topic is another thing...but just as I have always believed - Great things start from small beginnings...
More thoughts...
With everything that happens now in our beloved Mother Land. Why did I choose to write about this seemingly insignificant topic about beginnings? Simply put, I am a beginner in this blog thing. I don't want to relive the moments on that fateful day back home which created big big scar of our being a Filipino. I want to inspire those who consider themselves as beginners.
Greater things await you... all you have to do is take that very significant first step.
Now.
Deo Florence L. Onda's thoughts of the Philippine Hostage Tragedy
Here's a thought from my friends' friend on what he felt about the Philippine Hostage Tragedy.
In statistics, 1 out of a million is insignificant. We DON'T deserve to be insulted by all. We never insulted a race despite the fact that many Pinoys come home everyday DEAD! after being RAPED, HARASSED, KIDNAPPED, MALTREATED, MURDERED, MOCKED and others by other races... THEY don't have the right to tell us who we are. I condemn violence, but I CONDEMN MORE RACISM!When we do good things, no one really cares. When we commit mistakes, everyone and everything reacts. I Challenge the nations to look into their sides of the fence first before defining who we are in their perspectives. Being called the "Worst nation/country" in its generalized sense is a form of racism. I'm proud of my blood and I'm proud of my race. And hearing Filipinos condemning our own country is even more depressing. They could have asked themselves first of what they have done and contributed to make this nation a better place, before they even bother ranting about the things they don't want but they are experiencing. And as if this kind of event, i.e. hostage taking, police taking out of control, is not happening somewhere else in the world. They are judging us AS IF WE ARE REALLY THE WORST NATION AND THE WORST PEOPLE on earth... If we are the STANDARD OF BEING THE WORST then what would you call those nations who are putting forward WAR killing more and more people at the expense of the less powerful nations? Why not condemn those nations monopolizing the market and world politics leading to the aggravation of conditions of poverty and unequal distribution of wealth? Why not condemn those nations that produce the highest amount of greenhouse gases which leads to global warming affecting EACH AND EVERY organism living in the surface of the planet? They are putting us on the spotlight because in reality they envy us AS A PEOPLE, as a NATION, as a RACE. We have undergone so much hardships and trials, but we made through it as one. They envy us because in whatever conditions they put us in, We still make it to stand on our own and be proud that we are Filipinos. They envy us because even if we are geographically separated, we can call our nation PILIPINAS and us the people as MGA PILIPINO. If their sense of judgement is being based on a single act, I PITY THEM. It just suggests how little part of their brain is working. Because we are living an ever changing world and everything in another time will be changed. If this is their standard to exhibit RACISM, I PITY them, because in one time or another, they are the ones who bill mocked, judged and insulted. Its Nature's Law that Each and every action has an equal and opposite reaction. And I pray and hope that they wont experience the kind of RACISM we are experiencing now, because if they will.. Nature will have its way to make it worse than a hundred fold.
Our Apology
Wednesday, August 25, 2010
The hostage crisis in Manila on August 23, 2010 became a mirror of the incompetence of our police officers. Nine people were killed including the hostage taker himself who was shot by the snipers lurking nearby. The once proud nation is now being eyed as a dangerous place to travel, and a hot topic of ridicule in social networking sites.
I cannot blame these people getting mad at Filipinos. I, for one would be mad if this will happen to my fellow kababayans (I hope it won't). However, I would like to point out that Filipinos as a whole are sympathetic to the victims, peace loving, and are not into violence.
The entire people of the Philippines are grieving. Our heart goes out to the families of the victims and to those who were affected of this tragic event.
I also want to share a letter written by a high school student in Samar, Philippines about his feelings after the tragedy.
As you are reading this letter, I bet that you have seen or heard about what happened earlier in our country. A group of tourists was taken hostage by a policeman named Rolando Mendoza. After a few hours, some of the victims were dead and the hostage-taker too.
I wrote this letter not just to apologize but also to let everyone know that we Filipinos are not all like Mendoza. We are loving and good-hearted people.
For so many years, our country has been standing tall and overcoming every dilemma; be it small or big. Years ago (before I was born), you have watched us fight for what we think is right. We fought for the democracy of our nation.. The EDSA revolution. But that's just one out of many struggles.
Second, we Filipinos have been serving in other countries for the benefit of our families and we treat you as our own as well. With all due respect, I thank you all for giving us the trust through the years. For helping us to become what we are now. The Philippines is more than just a group of islands. We are a nation of strong and remarkable people. A country of beauty and love known to be hospitable and well-valued. I humbly apologize for what happened. No one in this world would want something like that to happen. Life should be valued.
I politely ask for the attention of the world. Please do not judge and mistreat us just because of what happened tonight. I have been searching the net and uncovered terrible words and accusations. Hong Kong has advised its people to avoid traveling here, China and HK has banned Filipinos and has called for The Philippines to be considered a no-go zone.
I can't blame you for what you have decided but I wish you could understand. Our country is now drowning in a sea of problems. And I know for sure that we have helped you in a way or another. Let peace and understanding reign at this time.
I know that this letter will just become trash but I beg you to understand. On behalf of the Philippine population.. WE ARE SORRY. As one song puts it...
"And I believe that in my life I will see an end to hopelessness, giving-up and suffering. And we all stand together this one time then no one will get left behind. Stand up for life. STAND UP FOR LOVE."
Sincerely yours,
A Haven for Filipino Teachers

This article written by Benito Vacio at ajarn.com about agencies in Bangkok that hire Filipinos is a must read not just for Pinoys alone but to other nationalities as well. I would like to thank Ben for posting this very informative article. Than you Ben!
Are you a newcomer to Thailand looking for an English teaching job or have you been idle here in the country for quite a time? How far have you gone with your job hunting? Do you know of any places where Filipino teachers are marketable?
To boost your morale a little, let me cite you an inspiring incident in one of the training seminars I attended when I was a Thai university student. The seminar emcee asked, "Have I learned from my Filipino teachers?" He answered his own question. "Yes, I learned a lot from my Filipino teachers." Similarly, he asked, "Have I learned from my native English teachers?" He answered, "Yes. I learned a lot from my English native teachers."
By this comment, one can assume that Filipino teachers are as good as native speakers. That's why Filipino teachers should also have their place in the "Land of Smiles." While native speakers have native accents, Filipino teachers have good teaching methodologies and students can learn a lot from that.
However, if Filipino teachers receive adulation from Thai students, I can't help wondering why qualified Filipino teachers are not preferred. Why are they not given the opportunity to teach in some schools in Thailand? Why are they not getting jobs?
Being unemployed in a foreign country can be a soul-destroying experience. It can dampen your spirit, make one impoverished, lead to boredom, and worst of all, force one to go back to the Philippines feeling 'a failure'.
I have heard numerous stories from Filipinos who have been unemployed for long periods and forced to live with friends. They apply to schools as walk-in applicants, but are often told, "We will call you when something comes up"
Teachers at the brink of despair must never give up. There is always hope. There is still a way. Get some ideas from this blog. It's all about applying to the right place, the right school, or the right agency.
Having been jobless for 3 months myself, I too have experienced what it's like to be unemployed in Thailand. The only difference I guess is that I have a lot of Thai friends , an American friend, a brother abroad, and they are always there to help me with finances. Then there's my wife and daughter who support me in my decisions. That's why I would like to present a list of agencies I consider to be the best places for employment. As Survivor, the American rock band says, "The Search is Over."
Here are some agencies which employ Filipino teachers at present:

Each agency has different sets of procedures and requirements. Just prepare all your credentials when you apply, including your ID pictures. Be ready with some teaching materials too, because a number of agencies require 5-10 minute teaching demonstration.
The salary may not be that great at first (except for agencies 1 and 2) but staying with an agency is always a good move. Many agencies assign teachers to schools in Bangkok, but other agents assign teachers to institutes in the nearby provinces. Wherever it is - give it a try. You can stay in the provinces temporarily and go to the city later when you have the chance.
There are reasons why Filipino teachers can't get a job. One reason is they bark up the wrong tree. I say this because they apply to schools that only employ native speakers at the request of their customers (generally the fee-paying parents). Another reason could be wrong timing. Perhaps the teacher has come to Thailand at an inopportune time - maybe in the middle of a term when very little hiring is done.
Once you're hired by the agency and assigned to a certain school, do your best all the time. "Live each day as if it were your last" and you will be successful.
Good luck in your job search and may you find your 'haven' in the agencies I have listed.
Teachers fail exams on own subjects
Thursday, August 19, 2010
I want to share to you guys what i read when i was browsing news about teachers in Thailand. I was dumbfounded. Anyhow, any input or whatever things you have in mind can be shared here.
Nationwide Obec test results ring alarm bells
High school students who perform poorly in computer studies, maths and sciences now have new friends to share the pain _ their teachers.
Teachers in secondary schools have had to sit exams in these subjects for the first time, with alarming results,
Most teaching at the senior high school level failed the tests, the Office of the Basic Education Commission said.
''Even teachers fail, so how can we raise the quality of students?'' Education Minister Chinnaworn Boonyakiat said yesterday after being informed of the results by Obec.
An exam requirement says examinees who earn a mark of less than 59% are considered to have a low standard of knowledge.
Obec said up to 88% of 3,973 teachers who specialise in computer sciences failed the test. A high number of failing teachers was also found in biology (86% of 2,846), maths (84% of 5,498), physics (71% of 3,487), chemistry (64% of 3,088) and astronomy and earth sciences (63% of 529).
The only consolation came from teachers at the junior high level. They earned high marks. Obec said 58% of 14,816 teachers teaching maths were categorised in the grade A group with marks of more than 80%, while 54% of 13,385 teachers did very well in sciences.
''This is the first time the ministry tested teachers nationwide in a move to develop teachers under the Thai Khem Khaeng [Thai strength] scheme,'' Mr Chinnaworn said.
The ministry has set a budget of 1.4 billion baht under the Thai Khem Khaeng scheme to improve the academic standards of teachers.
Mr Chinnaworn said the ministry aimed to build two groups of teachers under the development plan. Teachers at the elementary and junior high levels could be trained to improve their skills in integrated teaching _ one teacher able to teach more than one subject _ while those at the senior high level would be trained to have stronger expertise in specific subjects.
The upgrade of teachers is part of the ministry's plan to increase students' abilities.
''All students at the basic education level must earn more than 50% of the O-Net [Ordinary National Education Test] by 2018,'' Mr Chinnaworn said.
O-Net tests the general knowledge of students in Prathom 3 and 6 and Mathayom 3 and 6.
Obec has announced information and computer technology and English exam results of school directors. About 95% of about 40,000 directors failed the tests, Mr Chinnaworn said.
